The Polytech Choir 100th Anniversary Celebration
According to tradition the Polytech Choir (PK) was founded in 1904, when the new building for the Student Union of the Helsinki University of Technology, "Poli", had been inaugurated. A more accurate historical research done right before the centennial celebrations revealed, that the choir indeed was active already since 1900.
The Polytech Choir celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2004. Preparations for the centennial were started a few years ago. In 2002 The Polytech Choir announced a composition contest, which attracted wide national and international attention. Also a competition for sitz songs was announced later on. A portion of the songs of the competition were performed in a sitz song concert in the spring of 2004.
In the spring of 2004 The Polytech Choir performed in a concert with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra at the Finlandia Hall. The celebration culminated in an a cappella -festive concert and subsequent anniversary festivities that were held at Dipoli in Otaniemi. The choir also published a historical work presenting the hundred years of the choir, and a celebratory recording that is a cross-section of the most essential recordings of the choir.
